چکیده

Students’ reluctance in participation is one of the most common problems in most of the EFL classrooms. The present study was an attempt to find the factors that cause students’ reluctance in participation in the EFL classrooms at Nangarhar University. The questionnaires that contained twelve questions were distributed to senior and junior classes of English Department. It was investigated that there were some factors such as large number of students, shyness from the opposite gender, weak background of English, fear of being laughed, no preparation, having no self-confidence, lack of teacher motivation, having no interest in the subject matter, having no equal chance for participation, negative traits of teacher, and much homework prevent students from active participation in the class. Some of the best strategies that have been recommended by the participants included to minimize the number of students in class, to arrange separate classes for male and female students, to increase teacher motivation, having mutual relationship between teacher and students, self-preparation, using different teaching methodologies, and to avoid laughing of students on the participated students. The findings of this research help teacher and students to find obvious reasons of students not participating in the class.
